The April 2025 RESNET® HERS® Builder of the Month is Townwood Homes in Ontario, Canada.

Townwood Homes, a family-owned Ontario company founded 50 years ago, has long been in the forefront of home energy efficiency. The builder is the winner of the 2025 Cross Border Challenge CRESNET lowest score custom builder category, with a home HERS Index Score of 42.

The Cross Border Challenge is an annual friendly competition between American and Canadian Home Builders, recognizing the lowest HERS score in various categories of home that were third-party rated in the previous year.

In this month’s feature, we asked Michael Tersigni, Director of Sales/Marketing at Townwood Homes to share some insight on building HERS® homes for their customers.

Michael tells us, “At Townwood Homes, we are committed to building energy-efficient communities. Each year, we deliver hundreds of HERS-rated homes, ensuring our buyers receive best-in-class energy efficiency and superior home performance. An energy-efficient home isn’t just about savings—it’s about better comfort, better air quality, and a healthier environment. Our high-efficiency furnaces, LED lighting, water-saving fixtures, and Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) all contribute to a healthier, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible living space.”

He continues, “We emphasize the “Better Than Code” advantage in our marketing materials, model home tours, and digital campaigns. We educate buyers about the cost savings, comfort, and health benefits of our advanced insulation, efficient heating/cooling systems, and sustainable building practices. Our website, social media, and sales presentations highlight the benefits of owning a HERS-rated home. Our buyers appreciate the long-term savings, increased comfort, and healthier indoor air quality provided by our energy-efficient homes. Many homeowners notice the steady indoor temperatures, lower energy bills, and reduced allergens—all made possible through features like ERVs, Low-E windows, and airtight construction.
