Husband, father, 10+ year veteran of the home energy rating industry. These are just some of the words to describe RESNET’s Quality Assurance Field Specialist Billy Giblin. Now a new description has been added—Mayor of Nederland, CO. Billy Giblin was elected Mayor of Nederland in August 2022 in a special election. He defeated Mayor Pro Tem Tom Mahowald, who has held the position since May. Mahowald replaced previously elected Mayor Julian Taylor, who held the position briefly after being elected, before moving out of state for work. Giblin was sworn in on Tuesday, September 6th. Giblin says he was inspired to run after listening to the former Mayor speak about a lack of community involvement and participation in local government. Giblin said he has also spent years serving on the town’s board of zoning adjustment and the planning commission. “I felt like I had to (run for Mayor) and wanted to do it,” he said. “I think the two most important things I see now are that we have to work really hard to build and maintain trust with town government and stabilize and better compensate our town staff,” he said. “I think one of the big ways we are going to build transparency and trust with town government is by making it easier for people to have a voice and encouraging people to get involved.” As Mayor, Giblin said he plans to remind residents that each of the board’s meetings is live-streamed and recorded for the public to view online. He said he also wants to find ways to make the meetings more funny and enjoyable to attract people to attend or participate in local government. In addition, he plans to write a regular column in the local newspaper, along with other kinds of communication so people can follow along with what is being done. Some of Giblin’s priorities are to foster a community with mutual respect, the realization of shared values and greater involvement; support and enrich families and all members of the community; provide affordable housing; secure Nederland’s water rights; improve wildfire resilience; reduce the impact on the surrounding environment, and build a local economy in which all residents can thrive. Giblin joined the RESNET team in May 2018. As RESNET’s first person in the new role of Quality Assurance Field Specialist, he gives RESNET a more visible presence in the field and is able to gain valuable insight into the real-world challenges that Raters, RFIs, QADs and Providers face on a regular basis. Nederland, located in Boulder County, Colorado, has a population of about 1,500 and serves as an economic hub to the surrounding mountain communities of unincorporated Boulder and Gilpin Counties with an added population of well over 4,000 people. A short drive to both Boulder and Denver and situated in the picturesque mountains above Colorado’s Front Range, Nederland has convenient access to skiing, mountain biking, hiking & camping, including many points of access to the Continental Divide. Join us in congratulating RESNET Quality Assurance Field Specialist Billy Giblin on his mayoral win.
