RESNET and the International Code Council (ICC) have entered into a partnership to educate code officials on the Energy Rating Index compliance option to the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and to create a new career path for certified RESNET HERS® Raters to become ICC certified energy code inspectors. To date RESNET and the ICC have joined forces to develop American national consensus standards on defining the Energy Rating Index and procedures for testing air and duct leakage. These efforts are in the final consensus public review and comment process. In addition, a major effort is being undertaken to educate code officials on what the Energy Rating Index option is and its benefits to consumers and jurisdictions. This is being undertaken in code official training, factsheets and a video production. Another key initiative between the ICC and RESNET is training certified RESNET HERS® Raters. The increased code knowledge from such training in combination with ICC Certification will assist RESNET HERS® Raters to also become ICC certified energy code inspectors. ICC has recently recognized RESNET as an ICC Preferred Provider. Being an ICC Preferred Provider means that RESNET has been recognized for its “excellence in educational activities related to the design, build and compliance process in support of safe, sustainable, affordable and resilient structures.” This achievement will provide another opportunity for the RESNET community. RESNET will be designing and submitting for approval a course to be offered to HERS® Raters to become ICC energy code inspectors. Once the training course is approved, RESNET accredited Rater Training Providers will be able to offer the course to HERS® Raters. There will be no charge to Providers who decide to participate.
