Oct 22, 2024 General

RESNET® and the HERS® industry have lost a dynamic and effective voice with the passing of David Goldstein. After a valiant struggle with cancer, David passed away peacefully at home with his family on October 18, 2024.

David was a tireless advocate for home energy ratings and energy policy. He served with the Natural Resources Defense Council for 43 years. He was one of the longest-serving members of the RESNET Board of Directors. David began his service on the RESNET Board in 2001. He served two terms as the RESNET Board President.

He also strongly advocated for sensible energy efficiency codes and standards for appliances, buildings, and industry. He was instrumental in improving building standards in China, India, and Russia.

David’s leadership was recognized through receiving the 2002 Mac Arthur Foundation Fellowship (“the genius award”) and the 1998 Leo Szilard Award for Physics in the Public Interest.

Mr. Goldstein also published two books on energy policy, “Saving Energy, Growing Jobs” and “Invisible Energy: Strategies to Rescue the Economy and Save the Planet”.

He earned his BA and a Ph.D. in physics at the University of California Berkeley.

David’s obituary defined that the most effective way to honor him and continue his legacy is by, “performing innovative and creative work, listening with intention, loving fully, and developing further ways to reduce carbon emissions and repair the world.”

He will be missed by the many whose lives he touched and inspired to dream big.
