The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has been tasked with the operation of a recognition program for credentialing bodies called “DOE Energy Skilled Recognition”.

The Certified HERS Rater program is recognized by DOE as “Energy Skilled” in the category of Home Energy Audit. The RESNET Certified Home Energy Rater program appears on the list of Qualified Certification Programs for home energy auditors that taxpayers can use to claim the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C) for home energy audits, per criteria specified in Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Notice 2023-59.

As a part of this project, PNNL is working with large search engine organizations to develop a mechanism for consumers to readily identify companies that have at least one person, who is recognized as Energy Skilled by the Department of Energy and who has been trained by a credentialing body.

See information at the following website for additional information about the program: https://bsesc.energy.gov/recognition and https://bsesc.energy.gov/recognition/energy-skilled

To make it easy for HERS Raters to sign up for the recognition, PNNL has launched an online data collection form that Rating companies can upload. This form will be used to gather data from those companies. We are only requesting company-level information, respecting the privacy of individual’s names and other personally identifiable information.
