On May 4, 2012, Builder Magazine posted a story on the emerging force that the HERS® Index is becoming in the national housing market. The story concludes that “widely unused a few years ago, the rating system is gaining traction as the building industry’s equivalent of mpg.” The magazine reports that “in model homes across the country, small thermometer heat charts are popping up next to thermostats as builders use their Home Energy Rating System (HERS) score to compete with other new homes and, importantly, existing-home inventory.” The story states that builders marketing their homes HERS® Index Score is creating a “self-perpetuating cycle”, an quotes C.R. Herro of Meritage Homes, “The HERS® score wins because it’s simple and it’s well adopted.
