Applicants must be residents of Massachusetts. Individuals from an under-represented demographics in the HERS Industry are encouraged to apply. Additional eligibility criteria can be found here. The NEHERS Mentorship Program offers a structured framework for individuals interested in becoming Rating Field Inspectors (RFIs), HERS Modelers and HERS Raters to receive hands-on training, mentorship, and job placement support as an apprenticeship-equivalent pathway into the HERS Rating Industry. The RFI and Modeler pathways afford students time to go into greater depth learning the field work and modeling skill sets needed to successfully become a HERS Rater. Candidates who previously completed our RFI or HERS Modeler training will be given priority for mentored seats in our HERS Rater Training. A Rating Field Inspector (RFI) gathers data in the field by conduting on-site inspections and running diagnostic tests on buildings. A HERS Modeler takes the data gathered in the field and puts it into specialized software to create an energy model of the building. A HERS Rater gathers data in the field, creates an energy model of a building, and also analyzes how to improve the energy efficiency of a building. Both RFIs and HERS Modelers work under the guidance of a RESNET-certified HERS Rater. Candidates that apply will participate in a comprehensive intake and needs assessment process. If selected, candidates will be paired with an employer near their location for field work. They will also be paired with a peer mentor and will meet regularly with our staff for ongoing case management. The time commitment for RFIs and Modelers to complete this program will be approximately 10-15 hours a week for the first two months (including classroom time weeknights from 5:00-7:00 PM Eastern and time in the field during business hours individually scheduled) and the third month will be dedicated to completing their mentored ratings/models and Final Graded Evaluations. The time commitment for HERS Raters to complete this program will be approximately 30-40 hours a week for one month starting October 28th. (The timing will not allow a student to start as an RFI or Modeler in September and then progress to the Rater training in October. RFIs and Modelers need some time on the job before going on to the HERS Rater Training.) Please note that there is no cost to participate and applicants may apply for a monthly stipend during the training. Additional information about the program can be found on our Mentorship FAQ. If you are or know of an experienced HERS Rater who would like to become a Peer Mentor for this program, please apply here. If you are a HERS Rating company that is based in MA or does ratings in MA and would like to become an Employer Partner, please sign up here. Final registration deadline is August 1, 2024. Applications received after the deadline will be placed on a waitlist for the Fall Cohort and any applicants not enrolled in the Fall Cohort will be held for consideration for the Spring Cohort coming up in April 2025.
